The affiliation of counties to infantry regiments, eg. the Devonshire Regiment, was introduced in 1881. Prior to this regiments were numbered. Infantry regiments did not recruit exclusively or even primarily from their designated county. During the Great War Pals Battalions were formed - groups of men from the same area or occupation - to serve in the infantry regiments. Friends and colleagues joined the army together. Whilst this proved to be a major recruiting success the impact on communities when Pals Battalions suffered severed casualties was tremendous. Surviving men from infantry regiments which had sustained heavy losses in battle were often transferred to other regiments to continue fighting.
