Gallantry medals were awarded for acts of bravery. Announcements (citations) were placed in the London Gazette giving details of the action for which Victory Crosses and some other gallantry medals were awarded. During the Great War Military Crosses were only awarded to officers, the equivalent for non-commissioned officers and other ranks being the Military Medal.
