London Regiment

The London Regiment was formed in 1908 from established volunteer battalions in the London area.  It suffered over 29,000 deaths and was awarded a total of 9 Victoria Crosses during the Great War.  Originally the London Regiment consisted of 26 battalions, designated from 1st to 28th.  The designations 26th and 27th were reserved for the Honourable Artillery Company and the Inns of Court Regiment but were not used.  The London Regiment became the largest British infantry regiment to take part in the Great War, expanding to over 80 battalions by the addition of units to the existing numbered battalions.  The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th battalions of the London Regiment were attached to the Royal Fusiliers and therefore wore the same cap badge.
