The Royal Naval Division consisted of a brigade of the Royal Marine Light Infantry and two infantry brigades of eight battalions formed mainly from naval reservists. Other infantry units, such as the 1st Battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company, also served with the Royal Naval Division on the Western Front. The battalions formed from Royal Naval personnel were designated Drake, Hawke, Benbow, Collingwood, Nelson, Howe, Hood and Anson in 1914. In 1916 a 9th (Machine Gun) Battalion was formed. 3rd (Benbow) and 4th (Collingwood) Battalions were disbanded as a result of severe casualties at Gallipoli before they could be issued with cap badges.
