1939-45 War Medal miniature keepsake

The 1939-45 War Medal was issued to all full time armed forces personnel who had served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.  It was granted in addtion to the campaign stars and the Defence Medal.  Some civilians, such as war correspondents and ferry pilots who had flown in operational theatres, also qualified.  No clasps were issued for the 1939-45 War Medal but a bronze oak leaf on the ribbon denoted that the recipient had been mentioned in despatches.  The 1939-45 War Medal was originally struck in cupro-nickel, except for the Canadian version which was stuck in silver.  Medals issued to Australian and South African personnel were officially named but British 1939-45 War Medals were un-named.
