The Military Cross was instituted on 31 December 1914. Although the regulations have changed since, during the Great War the Military Cross could only be awarded to captains, lieutenants and warrant officers of the Army (including the Royal Flying Corps). This was extended during the war to include equivalent ranks of the Royal Air Force after its formation on 1st April 1918 for acts of bravery on the ground. THere was also provision for the Royal Naval Division and the Royal Marines. About 37,000 recipients were awarded the Military Cross once, 3,000 won it twice, 170 won it three times and 4 won it four times. The original medal was made of silver. The ribon was three equal stripes of white, deep purple and white. Military Medals were issued un-named. This miniature keepsake representation of the Military Cross comes with an information card. It is perfect for keeping with your family history research. You can check your ancestors' medal entitlement by accessing the Medal Index Cards. |
