The Military Medal was instituted on 25 March 1916 to non-commissioned officers and men of the Army (including the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Division) for individual or associated acts of bravery not of sufficient heroism as to merit the Distinguished Conduct Medal. In June 1916 it was extended to women. Some 115.600 Military Medals were awarded during the Great War. 5,796 recipients were awarded the Military Medal twice, 180 three times and 1 four times. The original medal was made of silver. The ribbon has broad dark blue edges and a central section of three narrow while and two narrow crimson stripes. This miniature keepsake Military Medal is a perfect compliment to your research. You can check your ancestor's medal entitlement by looking at the Medal Index Cards. |
