Description

Our 25mm lapel badge depicts the Silver War Badge issued during the Great War, which is shown as SWB on the Medal Index Cards.  It has a safety brooch backing and comes in a sturdy box with a clear lid for viewing.  Perfect for keeping, our Silver War Badge can also be removed to be worn and replaced.

The Silver War Badge was awarded to all service personnel who had been invalided out of the services and were no longer fit for service.  It was worn on the lapel of civilian clothing to enable men to show that they had "done their bit" and to prevent women from giving them white feathers, a sign of cowardice.  The Silver War Badge was first issued in September 1916, before any medals.  The original was 33mm across, made of silver and voided.  Each Silver War Badge was numbered (but this number is not a service number) and issued with a certificate.

Please note, unlike the original our Silver War Badge is not made of silver!
