Our Suffolk Regiment lapel badge depicts the cap badge as worn by men of the Suffolk Regiment between 1901 and 1958. The Suffolk Regiment was the senior Gibraltar regiment, the others being the Dorsetshire Regiment, the Essex Regiment and the Northamptonshire Regiment. In 1900 the War Office noted that whilst all four regiments used the Gibraltar Castle on their badges, agreement had not been reached on the design of the castle. In order to standardise the castle used the authorities laid down that the pattern was to be that used on the coinage of Gibraltar; a castle with three turrets and a key suspended below the central gate. Around the edge is the motto of the Suffolk Regiment, Montis Insignia Calpe, which means The badge of the Rock of Gibraltar. Although Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952 new badges were not issued to the Suffolk Regiment, although they were made. The regiment continued to use the King's Crown cap badge. In 1958 the Suffolk Regiment adopted the East Anglian Brigade badge and in 1959 the regiment was amalgamated with the Royal Norfolk Regiment. Approx lapel badge size: Material: All metal with antique gold finish and safety clasp. |
