Description

The Victoria Cross was first instituted in January 1856.  It is the supreme award for gallantry, available to all ranks in all actions since the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854.  Only three men have ever been awarded the Victoria Cross twice and only one, Noel Chavasse of the Royal Army Medical Corps, won it twice during the Great War.  Between 1914 and 1918 a total of 633 Victoria Crosses were awarded.

Original Victoria Crosses were made of bronze from Russian guns captured in the Crimea.  The ribbon is crimson, although during the Great War the ribbons of Victoria Crosses awrded to naval personnel were blue.

This miniature keepsake representation of the Victoria Cross comes complete with information card.  It is perfect for keeping with your family history research.  Medal entitlement can be ascertained by checking the Medal Index Cards.  Not many of us will find that our ancestors won the Victoria Cross but for those who do there should be much more information available from published sources.
